Florian Horder Wins 2016 European Junior on Third Playoff Hole
Munich, Germany – It was a dramatic end to the European Junior 2016 on Thursday when Florian Horder of Germany came from four strokes behind in the final round to win the title on the third playoff hole.
Toby Briggs from the United Kingdom led the first two rounds. He came into the final round with an -8 score, but struggled with five bogeys and one double bogey on the final day. He managed to offset those with four birdies and one eagle. It wasn’t enough to break par as he finished the round +1, tied with Horder at 212.
Horder had only one bogey and had four birdies to finish the day at -3. With the +1 score of Briggs, Horder erased the two-day lead and both finished regulation at -7 for the three-day tournament.
Both players were even after two playoff holes, but on the 3rd playoff hole, Horder scored a birdie to take the winner’s trophy. The birdie came on the 519-yard, par five, 18th hole at the Golfclub München Eichenried in Munich.
The first playoff hole was the par 3, 10th hole. Both Horder and Briggs hit their tee shots on the green, about 30 feet from hole. Both two-putted for par. For the second playoff hole, the players hit from the tees on the 519-yard, par 5, 18th hole. Both Horder and Briggs hit their third shot to less than three feet from the pin and both made birdies.
The players returned to the 10th hole for the third playoff hole. Horder hit his tee shot to about 25 feet right of hole and made his putt for birdie. Briggs hit his shot just to the front edge of the green, about 20 feet from the hole and missed his birdie putt.
In the Girls Division, Germany’s Pilar von Heynitz held the lead wire-to-wire to win the European Junior 2016 title. Von Heynitz finished the three rounds at +11. Finishing second was Nathalie Irlbacher at +17 with third going to Livia Plaumann. Both Irlbacher and Plaumann also call Germany home.
“This was a great first year for the European Junior at Golfclub München Eichenried,” said Tom Burnett, chairman of the board of directors for the World Junior Golf Series. “The weather was great and we had an outstanding field of golfers. We hope many of them will play in the American Junior in December.”
The next event on the World Junior Golf Series is scheduled for Dec. 28 -30 in St. Augustine, Fla. The Slammer & Squire golf course at World Golf Village will host the American Junior 2016. It will be the sixth year the tournament has been played at the course.
Last year there were over 60 competitors from 21 countries competing in the tournament and this year the field could be larger as word about the prestigious event for junior golfers spreads around the world. Germany brought the largest contingent of golfers to last year’s tournament with 10 players participating.
